Kaveh (Kawa) Azizpour, a Kurdish political prisoner, died in detention on Friday as a result of torture, his family alleged.=20
Azizpour, who was 25 years old, was arrested about two years ago and was charged with "supporting [the] Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran." The party is one of the oldest Kurdish parties in the county and has been banned by Iran.
Judiciary officials said that Azizpour was transferred from Mahabad prison in the western Iranian province of Kurdistan (Eastern Kurdistan) after suffering a cerebral stroke. According to the Judiciary, Azizpour passed away in hospital in the Kurdish city of Urmiyeh after being in a coma for 20 days.
But Amir Kabir website, his family wrote in Azizpour's funeral notice that he suffered the stroke as a result of torture, Amir Kabir University student newsletter reports.
Azizpour's brother, Assad, told Dastranj newsletter: "The moment that Kaveh went into coma for the second time, he was operated on, but intelligence officials, without paying attention to the doctor's advice and despite Kaveh's critical need for medical care, transferred him to the Intelligence [Ministry's] detention center 48 hours after his surgery." Assad added that it was in jail that Kaveh suffered his third stroke."
